Green-fingered residents across Babergh and Mid Suffolk can collect free compost from tomorrow

Green-fingered residents across Babergh and Mid Suffolk can collect free compost from tomorrow as part of a drive to get people growing.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are once again be holding their compost giveaways this spring.

The aim is to support people to live a greener lifestyle through experiencing the joys of growing their own plants.

The free giveaways have been timed to coincide with International Compost Awareness Week (5-11 May) which aims to raise public awareness about the benefits of composting.

These benefits include creating healthier soil as well as the reduction of emissions and waste.

Collection events are taking place at:

•   Eye Community Centre – Saturday, 4 May, 9am to 12pm
•   Morrisons car park, Hadleigh – Sunday, 5 May, 9am to 12pm
•   Station Road car park, Sudbury – Saturday, 11 May, 8am to 12pm
•   Needham Lake, Needham Market – Sunday, 12 May, 9am to 12pm

Attendees will be allowed up to two bags per car, with compost given out on a first come, first served basis.

An additional loose compost event will also be held in Stowmarket by local district councillors in June, with compost provided by the council’s waste team.

Residents will be able to bring along their own shovels and bags to help themselves to some free loose compost soil improver.

The event, which will also operate a first come, first served policy, will take place at Meadlands social club from 7am to 11.45am on 23 June.

Cllr Tim Weller, cabinet member for environment, culture and wellbeing at Mid Suffolk District Council, said:

“A few small changes in our day-to-day lives can have a massive impact on our environment. By picking up some of our free compost, you will already be taking a big step in the right direction.

“With summer round the corner, now is a great time to invest some energy in your garden, so stop by one of our free compost giveaways and kickstart your environmental journey.”

Cllr Daniel Potter, cabinet member for environment at Babergh District Council, said:

“It is always a pleasure to support International Compost Awareness Week and help those in Babergh make some greener choices.

“This is also an opportunity for people to discover a new passion, so hopefully this free compost helps to grow some tasty fruit and vegetables or some wonderful plants.”
