Dual Drivers licences
Hackney carriages (taxis) and private hire vehicles (PHVs) are licensed in a similar way, but are subject to different conditions.
If you would like to drive both types of vehicle, you can apply for a Dual Drivers licence.
To assess your suitability for this licence, we will need you to - upon application - carry out the following checks:
- A Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS check). This will be an enhanced level check, required on application. You will need to register for the DBS Update Service and provide us with your check code each year. This service has an annual fee of £13
If you choose not to register for this service, you must have a DBS check each year (at a cost of £52.50) - A medical check. You must provide us with a completed medical examination, which has been completed by your GP. This check will be required every three years at a minimum
If you are aged 65 or over, you will need to have a medical check annually
We also accept medical checks performed by D4Drivers. A patient summary must be taken with you, for this medical check to be valid
Applications from foreign nationals
If you:
- were born outside of the UK and
- have been resident in the UK for less than five years and
- are not a British Citizen
you will need to provide us with a Certificate of Good Conduct.
Driver training
All new applicants must first gain a Level 2 certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver. This training is carried out at your own expense, and you must present us with your pass certificate.
You will need to undertake a training refresher every three years. We will let you know when your training refresher is due.
