Closure of Kingfisher Leisure Centre pool extended

30/08/24
Pool will be closed until 14 September, but all other facilities remain open

The swimming pool at Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury will remain closed until 14 September while repairs to a damaged roof are completed.

The pool and health suite initially closed on Friday, 23 August to allow for an investigation and repairs to be carried out after damage to a glass panel above the pool. The cause of this damage still remains unclear.

Work has continued since then, including over the Bank Holiday weekend. This has required the pool to be drained and scaffolding erected.

It was hoped the pool would be able to reopen to this weekend - however, the complexity of the repair and time required for the supply of the specialist glass panel replacement means the pool will not now reopen until Saturday 14 September.

All other facilities at Kingfisher, including the gym, remain open as usual. The sauna was reopened on Monday.

The leisure centre is owned by Babergh District Council and operated by not-for-profit social enterprise Abbeycroft. While the pool is closed, the council will also take the opportunity to carry out additional maintenance work.

A council spokesperson said:

“We have been working as quickly as we can to repair the damage. We’re sorry for any disappointment the pool closure has caused, but people’s safety is our top priority. We thank everyone for their patience.”
Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft, added:

“We’re sorry for the disruption this has caused at the end of the summer holidays, but we must ensure people’s safety. We have been contacting customers directly who have bookings with us, and we thank everyone for their understanding.

“We look forward to welcoming people back to the pool when the work is complete.”

Swim Academy members impacted by the closure will be notified by email and credited on their next available direct debit payment for any missed lessons. Members can use any of Abbeycroft’s other five swimming pools as part of their membership.

If you have a booking affected by the closure, Abbeycroft will contact you to rebook or refund. Alternatively, you call the contact centre on 01284 757473 between 9am-1pm at weekends or 9am-6pm weekdays.
