Register to vote
If you would like to vote in local and general (national) elections, you must register to vote. Once you have registered, you will be added to the electoral register.
Registering to vote online is easy to do, and should only take you five minutes:
You will need your National Insurance number. If you do not know it, you can find a lost National Insurance number.
To register to vote, you must be:
- aged 16 or over (you will be allowed to vote when you are aged 18 or over)
- a British citizen or
- an Irish or EU citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK (or who does not need permission)
- a Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK (or who does not need permission)
Which elections can I vote in?
Once you have registered to vote, you should be able to vote in:
- district, parish or town, county elections
- general elections
