Under the Pet Animals Act 1951, those who run a pet shop must obtain a licence to protect the welfare of animals sold as pets.
Anyone who has not been disqualified from keeping animals may apply. At least one member of staff must, in the opinion of the local authority taking into account the animals being sold, have appropriate training.

One year, from 1 January to 31 December. All licences must be renewed on 1 January, irrespective of the date they were issued. There are no reduced fees for licences that only cover part of a year.
You can apply to the Magistrates' Court if your application is refused.
